Joining PenFed is fast and easy. Let’s talk about what it means to be a PenFed member, how you’re eligible for membership, and how to join online.

We the People

Like all credit unions, PenFed determines who can become one of its member-owners through a concept called “field of membership.” A field of membership describes the citizens, communities, and organizations that form the individuals of a credit union.

Members are more than just customers. They own the credit union. Members democratically elect the Board of Directors, a group of volunteers who determines the policies under which PenFed operates. Members are the heart of everything we do.

Am I eligible to join?

There are many ways you can be eligible to join PenFed. If you serve in the United States military or Uniformed Services, are an employee of the U.S. government, or are related to someone who is, you’re already in our field of golden member cardmembership. However, those aren’t the only groups in our field of membership: dozens of organizations provide eligibility to join PenFed.

If you don’t happen to belong to one of those categories, don’t forget you can join a group like National Military Family Organization or Voices for America’s Troops. Not only will you enjoy your PenFed eligibility, you’ll help organizations that provide support to America’s heroes.

How do I join?

Joining PenFed takes only a minute or two. Go to PenFed.org and choose Join PenFed.  In three steps, you’ll become a PenFed member.

  1. Describe your eligibility. We need to know what part of our field of membership you’re using to join PenFed. If you’re joining the National Military Family Association or Voices for America’s Troops, the online form will walk you through the process.
  2. Collect your information. We’ll need some basic personal information for your membership account, which we’ll keep absolutely secure and private.
  3. Fund your account. Your Share Account represents your ownership of PenFed as a member. The minimum deposit for your Share Account is five dollars. Plus, if you join through the National Military Family Association or Voices for America’s Troops, your membership dues will also be collected when you fund your account.  Membership renewal in one of these associations is not required in order for you to maintain your PenFed membership.  Once a member, always a member.

Once you’ve been through these three steps, you’ll receive confirmation quickly.

What happens next?

Your membership account will be created quickly. We’ll send you email instructions for logging into your online account. Your PenFed Online access gives you all the tools you need to use PenFed’s services. You can log in, create a checking account, and apply for one of PenFed’s outstanding loans.

You’ll soon receive a “signature card” in the mail. This is a one-page form you’ll need to sign and return. We need your legal signature for your account record.

You don’t need to wait for the signature card form, though. As soon as you can log into your PenFed Online account, you can start applying for services and financial products right away.
