Best Military Travel Deals - PenFed Your Money Blog

The Americans who serve our country and communities quietly sacrifice so much from their personal lives to help build a better world. In return, many companies and organizations show their appreciation by helping members of the military save money when traveling.

Whether you’re relocating on orders (again!) or taking your family on a well-deserved getaway, investigate the best military travel deals available today. Look for and ask about these military discounts on lodging, airfare, rental cars and more.

Top travel deals

Start planning your trip with a search through Expedia’s limited-time military travel deals. These deals are available only to current and retired U.S. military personnel. To be eligible, you’ll need to validate your military credentials with Expedia and then sign in to Expedia+ or join the Expedia+ membership program (free).

Another great way to find dozens of military travel discounts is to sign up for a Veterans Advantage card. Veterans Advantage benefits include your immediate family members and also offer non-travel discounts from brands like CVS, Dell, Ford and Wendy’s.

Hotel discounts

Hotels discounts and special packages for military personnel and their families are everywhere. Ask your military friends for recommendations, and ask the hotel before you make your reservation.

Choice Hotels offers special rates to active duty and retired military personnel and federal employees, usually about 10 percent. You’ll find military discounts at Starwood Hotels, Intercontinential, Marriott, Holiday Inn, Extended Stay America, Staybridge, La Quinta, Hilton (including Hampton Inn), Best Western, Motel 6, and Red Roof. Hyatt Hotels and Resorts also offers special rates to government and military personnel.

Consider staying on base when traveling off peak season for your destination. Active duty military personnel get first dibs on Space-Available (Space-A) lodging. Begin researching the possibilities at Department of Defense Lodging.

Airline discounts

Like hotels, many airlines offer discounts or perks like free checked bags or priority security checks, but you almost always must call to request the discount. You’ll find military benefits at Allegiant Air, American Airlines, CheapOair, Delta, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, United and Virgin Atlantic.

Space-A military benefits apply to air travel as well as hotels. Space-A flights are available only to active and retired military personnel with an ID card. You’ll need an extremely flexible schedule to take advantage of these flights, since flights and availability change at a moment’s notice, but the result is travel that costs next to nothing.

Discounts on the road

Ground travel is eligible for discounts too, whether you’re going by Amtrak train, Greyhound bus or rental car. Benefits include price discounts or free insurance waivers. Be prepared to show your military ID card. Bonus tip: Trucks from rental agencies to be used for moving are eligible for discounts, too.

Amusement park discounts

Amusement parks often offer specials for military personnel, including Busch Gardens’ Waves of Honor program for vets and their families. Look for more military discounts at Dollywood and Disney.

National parks passes

Active-duty military personnel and their dependents can get free annual passes to National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands system. Be prepared to show military ID when you sign up. Passes provide free admission to national parks as well as discounts on camping at most national parks.

Restaurant discounts and deals

Going out to eat? Dig in to restaurant discounts for active duty and retired servicemembers — they’re everywhere. The best way to find out what’s available is to ask or call ahead.
